Washington DC -June 25- Real gross domestic product (GDP) grew at an annual rate of 2.7% in the first quarter of 2010, following an increase of 5.6% in the fourth quarter of 2009, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Washington DC -June 23- New orders for manufactured durable goods in May decreased $2.2 billion or 1.1 percent to $192.0 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This decrease followed five consecutive monthly increases including a 3.0 percent April increase. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.9 percent. Excluding defense, new orders decreased 1.1 percent.

Washington DC -June 22-Existing-home sales remained at elevated levels in May on buyer response to the tax credit, characterized by stabilizing home prices and historically low mortgage interest rates, according to the National Association of Realtors®. Gains in the West and South were offset by a decline in the Northeast; the Midwest was steady.

Washington DC -June 21- The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the U.S. Department of the Treasury today introduced a monthly scorecard on the nation’s housing market. Each month, the scorecard will incorporate key housing market indicators and highlight the impact of the Administration’s unprecedented housing recovery efforts, including assistance to homeowners through the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) and the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP).

Washington DC -June 17- Initial claims for unemployment compensation last week were 472,000, an increase of 12,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 460,000. Nationwide, the 4-week moving average was 463,500, a decrease of 500 from the previous week’s revised average of 464,000, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Washington DC -June 17- The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) declined 0.2 percent in May on a seasonally adjusted basis, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The index for all items less food and energy increased 0.1 percent in May, posting a monthly increase for only the second time this year.

Washington DC -June 16- Privately-owned housing starts in May were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 593,000. This is 10.0 percent (±10.3%) below the revised April estimate of 659,000, but is 7.8 percent (±9.7%)above the May 2009 rate of 550,000, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.
